On-premises partners were given the opportunity to install a new SMTP relay feature with version 2021.3. This was designed to help partners adhere to the new Microsoft Partner guidelines.
After installing however, it was learned that “Due to limitations with Microsoft Graph API” that multiple domains, and email addresses would pose a problem. We saw many install, then remove this service from their servers due to these issues, going back to direct smtp sending.

This relay also only had two options, O365 and GSuite.
In the May 22nd enhancement release notes, it was noted that the SMTP relay service had been updated. This updated SMTP relay looks promising, but we haven’t tested it for limitations yet.
CW KB: SMTP Host ConnectWise SMTP Relay Service – ConnectWise
There is not a lot of information in the current KB article, but are stating the requirement of a Third-party SMTP Host.
While a best practice, this technically isn’t required. Those using spam filtering services simply us this service as their smart host.
With very limited information, using this updated service would allow simpler control for SMTP over using IIS as the SMTP service.
We are researching how this will affect multiple email addresses and domains and will update this blog article once we have better data.
